The guitarists Susana Prieto (Spain) and Alexis Mouzourakis (Greece) are considered among the most distinguished guitar duos on the international music scene. Since their first appearance as Duo Melis in 1999 at the Volos International Guitar Festival, they have received outstanding critical acclaim for the intensity of their performances, their exceptional virtuosity, and their remarkable musical unity.
They have performed in some of the world’s leading concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonie, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, the Megaron Athens Concert Hall, and Merkin Concert Hall in New York, while they regularly give concerts and masterclasses at major international festivals throughout Europe, America, and Asia.
Duo Melis has received numerous international distinctions, including First Prizes at the prestigious guitar duo competitions of Frechen (Germany), Montélimar (France), Mauro Giuliani (Italy), and Paris, as well as the Leipzig Chamber Music Award. In 2005, they were selected by the internationally renowned organisation Yehudi Menuhin – Live Music Now, while their recordings have received enthusiastic reviews and important distinctions from critics worldwide.
They have appeared as soloists with renowned orchestras, including the Berliner Symphoniker, Neubrandenburger Philharmonie, Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, the Bucharest Radio Orchestra, and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of distinguished conductors, among them the legendary composer and guitarist Leo Brouwer.
Their extensive repertoire spans from Baroque music to contemporary creation and includes works by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Brouwer, and Vivaldi, alongside numerous arrangements of their own. A particularly significant aspect of their artistic work is their historically informed interpretation of repertoire performed on authentic 19th-century instruments.
Alongside their international concert career, Susana Prieto and Alexis Mouzourakis have been teaching since 2006 at the Strasbourg Academy of Music, contributing significantly to the development of the next generation of guitarists.
