SUMMARY:CHRISTOS RAFALIDES Trio
DESCRIPTION:CHRISTOS RAFALIDES Trio\n\n“POINT TWO” \nThe program of Megaro Gyzi Festival 2012 is concluded on 23/8 with “Point Two”\, a meeting of two Greek musicians “of the world”\, the leading internationally vibraphonist and composer Christos Rafalides\, founder of the renowned jazz group “Manhattan Vibes”\, and the significant bassist and composer Petros Klampanis\, with guest the top percussionist Bodek Janke. Through the prism of their experiences\, they will perform their own compositions and adaptations of “The Great American Songbook”. A balanced dynamic hearing between lyricism\, passion\, knowledge and skill is what is promised by the three jazz musicians from New York. \nChristos Rafalides\, vibraphone\nPetros Klampanis\, bass\nBodek Janke\, percussion & drums \n \nChristos Rafalides\, composer – vibraphonist \nBorn in Kozani\, Greece\, Christos Rafalides can’t remember a time when he wasn’t surrounded by music. The influence of his older brother led him to the piano at the age of seven. He began his studies in classical percussion at the age of fourteen\, and by the time he was twenty he was working in some of the best Orchestras in Greece. He believed he would continue his career as a classical percussionist\, until one evening when he heard pianist George Cables with the group of Billy Cobham ‘here was this guy\, playing with his shoes off\, conveying so much feeling through his instrument… I knew I wanted to be able to express myself like that.” From that moment\, Christos knew he would be a jazz musician. \nUpon receiving a scholarship to the Berklee College of Music\, he moved to Boston\, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree\, studying with Ed Saindon. His desire to continue growing brought him to New York City to study with acclaimed jazz vibraphonist Joe Locke at the Manhattan School of Music. Finishing his Masters Degree\, Christos began to immerse himself in the vital NYC jazz scene. In a short while he was playing with such notable musicians as Ravi Coltrane\, Antonio Sanchez\, Donny McCaslin\, Mark Ledford and Ron Affif\, among others. \nChristos found his personal voice as a player and composer when he established ‘Manhattan Vibes’\, a jazz group with a modern sound\, which revealed his developing affinity for Latin and other world musics. The group’s eponymously titled CD featured the talents of John Benitez on bass and Steve Hass on drums\, two of the most respected young players on the contemporary music scene. The legendary trumpeter Randy Brecker also appears as a special guest. In Jazz Times’ magazine’s 2002 Year In Review issue\, the recording was held as\, “…one of the top-ten jazz recordings of 2002”. \nChristos’ latest project is a vibes/marimba collaboration with his erstwhile mentor\, Joe Locke. The duo performed original music from their recent release “Van Gogh by Numbers” to an enthusiastic overflowing audience at the 2005 PASIC convention in Columbus\, Ohio – an event which sparked considerable interest in the percussion world. \nIn the spring of 2007\, Christos performed a series of concerts with the Charles Mingus “Epitaph” Band featuring bassist Christian McBride and conductor Gunther Schuller. In the fall of that same year\, he also performed with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center in New York City. \nWhether in the studio or in concert situations\, Christos continues to maintain a busy schedule. Recent highlights include a performance as featured soloist with the Orchestra of Colours\, performing Thanos Mikroutsikos’ “Music Stories” at the Athens Concert Hall; appearing\, along with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl\, on George Fakanas’ critically acclaimed “Domino” CD; featured soloist with Maria Farantouri (Athens Festival) at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus; adding his vibraphone and marimba textures to the recent recordings of vocalists Chaka Khan\, Christy Baron\, Italian pop artist Jovanotti\, Greek singer-songwriter Alkinoos Ioannidis. Recently he played on the soundtrack of Michaels Moore’s latest film “Capitalism\, a Love Story”. \nHis latest collaboration with Greece’s legendary composer Mimis Plessas led to the release of two projects\, both based on Plessas’ music from the 60s: the album “Echo: the music of Mimis Plessas” (Emarel Music) featuring Evi Siamanda on vocals and the soon-to-be released duo recording “We Two” (Emarel Music) featuring Mimis Plessas on piano and Christos on vibraphone. He also collaborated with pianist Sergio Salvatore in a duo recording entitled “Dark Sand”. Salvatore and Rafalides began playing together in 2007\, and have gone on to travel throughout the United States with notable performances at New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. \nChristos has led groups at many of NYC’s cutting edge venues including the Blue Note\, the 55 Bar\, the Jazz Standard and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. He is also a member of “Queens College” private lesson faculty. \n \nPetros Klampanis\, bass \nBassist\, composer\, and arranger Petros Klampanis grew up on the Zakynthos Island in Greece\, a place with very rich musical heritage where Italian and Balkan music traditions melt together. This music amalgam was Petros first major influence and seed of inspiration to pick up the piano and guitar\, and start singing in local choirs at a very early age. A few years later\, at 15\, he attended a pop music concert where he discovered his soon-to-be favourite electric bassist\, Yiotis Kiourtsolgou. It was this experience which would open his world to something new: the bass and jazz. Eagerly\, Petros pursued the bass with constant playing and practicing and he also began listening intently to artists like Chick Corea\, Dave Brubeck\, Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, Jaco Pastorius. \nAfter finishing high school\, he moved to Athens in order to attend the Polytechnic school of the city. It wasn’t long before he realized that the ship engineering course was not as desirable as it seemed so he decided to take exams for the Music department of Athens University. His life would take another positive turn when he was accepted in 2001. During Petros’ time in Athens\, he had the chance of playing with some of the finest Greek jazz artists today. Additionally\, he took part in various musical projects such as the Athens Big Band and played in many prestigious venues in Greece like the Athens Concert Hall and Thessaloniki Concert Hall. \nIn 2005 to 2007\, Petros Kampanis continued to pursue a formal education in music by joining the double bass department of the Amsterdam Conservatory where he got his BA degree and graduated with distinction. From there\, Petros toured in Europe (Germany\, Holland\, Luxemburg\, Belgium\, France\, Spain\, Monaco\, Portugal\, Switzerland\, Greece\, Bulgaria\, Cyprus\, Latvia\, Lithuania\, and Estonia) and took part in many major European jazz festivals. During this time\, he received many awards and honors in major music competitions most notably the Hoeilaart/Brussels Jazz Competition in 2008\, and the YPF International Jazz Concourse and Amersfoort Jazz Competition both in 2007. \nIn 2008\, Klampanis moved to New York City to study and eventually earned a Masters in jazz performance from the Aaron Copland School of Music. Today Petros Klampanis has been performing in various venues in New York\, where he has shared the stage with many top musicians from the New York jazz scene including Paul Bollenback\, Gretchen Parlato\, Antonio Hart\, Michael Mossman\, Gilad Hekselman\, Christos Rafalides\, David Berkman\, and Fabio Morgera to name a few. \nAdditionally\, since 2009\, Petros serves as a guest teacher at the Ionian Music University of Corfu\, Greece. \nHis first personal album “Contextual”\, featuring Gretchen Parlato\, David Berkman\, Paul Bollenback and original material for string quartet and solo double bass\, has been released in April 2011 on Inner Circle Music label. \n“A formidable player and composer\,bassist Petros Klampanis […] makes his auspicious Stateside debut with Contextual”.\nBill Milkowski\, Jazztimes Magazine \n“Contextual is one of the most exciting records I have heard from a bass player in years. The writing and playing is excellent\, with a very good sound and a wide spectrum of musical ideas”.\nArild Andersen\, bassist\, composer \n“An amazing project”.\nGreg Osby\, saxophonist\, composer\, producer \n“Excellent writing and playing. I especially like Petros’ aggressive melodicism\, beautiful intonation\, and uniquely personal string writing”.\nDrew Gress\, bassist\, composer \n“Klampanis plays solo bass with overdubs to create a double bass orchestra on Basscope and Blue Cave\, which are done so masterfully that you’d think it was a full symphony”.\nKevin Johnson\, notreble.com \n \nBodek Janke\, percussionist – drummer \n“Janke is truly among the good ones…”\, Jazzpages\, March 2010 \nPolish-born drummer and percussionist Bodek Janke has been dubbed “above-average”\, “outstanding” and “a master of many dialects” by international journalists in various musical situations. Being born into a Polish-Russian musicians’ family\, it was obvious for him to approach a professional musical career from an early age. His mother Olga Janke taught him first piano lessons at the age of 3 and his aunt\, Tatyana Kamysheva taught him composition and music theory. At the Badisches Konservatorium Karlsruhe / Germany he received his classical percussion and music theory education. In his teenage years\, Bodek was already an internationally acclaimed touring and recording marimbaphone virtuoso. From 1998 to 2004 he studied jazz-drums and jazz-composition at the Academy of Music of Cologne and graduated “with distinction”. He completed his studies in 2007 with a “Master of Arts and Music Performance” – diploma from the City College of New York. \nDuring his 6-year long stay (2004-2010) in New York City he had the opportunity to work with various artists such as David Liebman\, Billy Harper\, Ben Monder and Dave Binney. He performed several times at Carnegie Hall where recently his arrangement of “Wings”\, a composition by Samir Chatterjee\, was premiered by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra before Anoushka Shankar’s performance. Regular engagements at local jazzclubs and venues (Iridium\, Smalls\, The Knitting Factory\, 55 Bar) and international tours (the USA\, Turkey\, Kasakhstan\, Germany\, Greece\, France\, Spain\, Poland\, Morocco and Russia amongst others) were a long lasting source and inspiration for his music and work. Furthermore\, he met his Guru (mentor)\, Pandit Samir Chatterjee and began his studies of Indian Classical Music and Tabla in New York. \nSince 2010 Bodek Janke has moved back to Germany\, working regularly with the WDR\, NDR and HR Radio Bigbands (as a drummer and percussionist)\, with saxophonist Steffen Schorn\, pianist and vocalist Olivia Trummer\, trumpeter Matthias Schriefl and pianist Kristjan Randalu. Internationally he has been working with the US jazz violinist Jeremy Kittel (Turtle Island String Quartet)\, the israeli guitarist Gilad Hekselman (Ari Hoenig Quartet)\, the Parisian harmonica player Olivier Ker Ourio and the Moscow State Jazz Orchestra\, just to name a few. \nBesides appearances on jazz festivals (i.e. Moers Jazz\, Izmir Caz Festivali\, Jazzycolors Paris\, Jazz Au Chellah Rabat\, Jazz from A to Z Almaty\, Jazzopen Stuttgart) and concert engagements at The Kennedy Center (Washington DC)\, the Philharmonics of Cologne\, Essen\, Warsaw und Almaty\, Janke performed several times at Schloss Elmau and recorded music for labels such as Universal\, Melodia\, Jazz´n´Arts\, Peregrina and Neuklang. \nIn 2008 he was awarded both the “Jazzpreis Baden-Württemberg”\, Germany’s highest-endowed award for jazz musicians and the “German Records Critics’ Award” (“Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik”\, with Olivia Trummer’s CD “Westwind”). In 2010 he was voted “Best Soloist of the Year” at the “Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis” – competition in Mannheim and he won the the first prize at the “4th International Bucharest Jazz Competition”. This year he also became scholarship holder of the Baden-Württemberg Arts Foundation\, the “Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg”. \nCurrently the intensely touring musician is focusing on recording his second own album “Global Dance Kulture”\, teaching workshops and masterclasses and establishing a cultural center and educational institution in the mountain region of Lower Silesia (Karkonosze). \n\n\nPress Quotes \n“With an intuitive grasp for the moment\, careful\, creative and like a mastermind at the same time… a masterful performance in the soundscapes of jazz”\n(STICKS\, April 2009) \n“Above-average. A magic moment of improvised music. Janke makes drums and cymbals sing”\n(SUEDKURIER\, Juli 2009) \n“The percussive work of Bodek Janke intertwines subtly and one understands immediately why this young man has been called an outstanding percussionist”\n(hr-2 KULTUR / Jazzfacts\, März 2010) \n“The Universal Language – music – is made up of many dialects. Bodek Janke is a master of more musical dialects than anyone I can think of and on his new CD “Global dance kulture” Bodek tells a joyous music story by combining the world’s musics in a personal and sophisticated way. Enjoy the journey”\n(JOHN RILEY\, New York City\, May 2008) \n“The music (The CD “Desde Manhattan”) drew me and took me for a ride around town. Fantastic playing and composing as well. Janke is in full form”\n(ARI HOENIG\, New York City\, June 2007) \n“Janke’s drumming is a masterpiece\, his distinct and emotional playing is surpassing”\n(BERND KONRAD\, Stuttgart\, March 2008) \n“Having produced recording sessions with Bodek\, I can attest to what a truly marvelous musician and human being he is. His talents are astounding\, with a diversity of influences that is incredibly vast\, musically connecting the ends of the earth. Music is the language of all people\, and in this language Bodek is a poet. He represents what this society is striving for – unification through work\, love\, and beauty”\n(TYLER DUNCAN\, Michigan\, October 2007) \n“Bodek Janke walks playfully in between the worlds\, he never seems to fear borders between genres\, he actually merges them into a masterfully balanced unit. Music under his guidance radiates effortlessness and implicitness\, making it distinctive throughout”.\n(ELIZA REZNICEK\, Badische Neueste Nachrichten\, 28. Februar 2008) \n“The polish-born Bodek Janke is one of the most exceptional young musicians of the current Jazz and World Music scenes. Based in New York City\, he is a cultural commuter between the USA\, Kazakhstan\, Russia\, Poland and Germany. With his playing\, Janke creates a new\, distinctive style\, merging drumset with a wild variety of instruments and drawing upon African\, Indian\, Eastern European and Latin American music traditions. He plays World Music with a jazz attitude and Folk Music with a contemporary language. And\, above all\, this “shaman’s” energetic and expressive performances and compositions captivate every audience. An event that touches you to the bone”.\n(Stan Kelberg\, ‘Forum’ 24/II\, New York 2006)

SUMMARY:TAKIS BARBERIS Group
DESCRIPTION:TAKIS BARBERIS Group\nThe journey continues on 20/8 with Takis Barberis Group in a special coexistence between East and West\, where jazz music meets magically funk and rock but also the Indian\, Balkan and Greek music. Takis Barberis on guitar\, one of the most important Greek jazzmen\, interprets both older and new unreleased compositions of him accompanied by Manos Saridakis on piano\, Yiorgos Georgiadis on bass and Michalis Kapilidis on drums. \nTakis Barberis\, guitar\nManos Saridakis\, piano\nYiorgos Georgiadis\, bass\nMichalis Kapilidis\, drums \n \nTakis Barberis\, composer – guitarist \nTakis Barberis was born in Athens in 1963. His relationship with music began at the age of 15. He attended the National Conservatory of Greece\, studying classic guitar with Dimitris Fampas\, higher theory with Yiannis Avgerinos and on graduation also received the Harmony certificate. Simultaneously he played electric guitar in many rock groups. His interest in jazz began in 1979 and it would determine his future course. \nIn 1982 he presented his first compositions with the band “Jazz Fusion Quintet” when his cooperation with David Lynch and Takis Farazis began\, continuing later in the group “Iskra” (1985)\, with G. Fakanas\, N. Touliatos and L. Pliatsikas. ‘Iskra’ was one of the most successful and progressive groups of that era\, releasing their first album “A New Day” (Polygram) in 1986 that also includes two of his compositions. In the period 1987 – 1989 he formed the group “Model 63” in a more experimental approach of rock music with Greek lyrics\, they released the album “Model 63” (Lyra 1988). \nIn 1990 his first personal album was released entitled “Something From July” (Lyra)\, with his compositions from the 80’s including many Jazz\, Rock and Latin influences\, with the participation of T. Farazis\, G. Kontrafouris\, T. Paterelis and K. Kalogirou. “Are You Happy?” (Lyra\, 1992) was his second album\, with the classic sound of a Jazz Quintet (G. Kontrafouris\, T. Paterelis\, G. Vassalos\, K. Kalogirou). This second album was Barberis’s first venture into combining Jazz rhythms and harmony with Eastern and Greek elements. \nIn his third and most mesmerising album “Episodes” (Lyra 1995) explores these themes even deeper with the participation of internationally known Indian percussionist Trilok Gurtu and the traditional Greek musician Petro-Loukas Halkias on clarinet\, and eight highly talented Greek musicians (P. Benetatos\, G. Kontrafouris\, T. Paterelis\, Y. Kiourtsoglou\, G. Vassalos\, K. Kalogirou\, T. Farazis & P. Kourtis). The critics characterise “Episodes” as one of the most successful combinations of jazz and traditional elements (Greek and Indian music). \nBarberis continues and evolves the influences that we meet in “Episodes” with his fourth album “Naiva” (Lyra\, 1998)\, a play on naivety in title and music with the return of Petro-Loukas Halkias and the Indian musicians Reshma Srivastava and Shankar Lal. ‘Porto Kayio’ (LIBRA MUSIC\, 2004) is his latest album\, a soundtrack for journeys through splendid vocals\, sounds and rhythms\, analogue as well as digital. Together with his bassman Yiorgos Georgiadis\, drummer Michalis Kapilidis\, pianist Manos Saridakis and fellow passengers Debashish and Subhasis Bhattacharya from India\, Takis Barberis creates each piece as a musical homeland: from Greece to India\, Middle East\, Africa and once again back to his own land. \nBarberis has collaborated with Trilok Gurtu\, Glenn Corneille and almost all Greek musicians of Jazz scene\, and has taken part in many live performances in Greece and abroad. \nSince 1981 Barberis teaches modern guitar and improvisation at various Conservatories (National Conservatory of Patras\, Pindareio\, Raimondi Conservatory\, R.S.I.). The last six years he has been working at the F. Nakas Conservatory teaching jazz \n \nManos Saridakis\, piano – keyboards – hammond organ \nManos Saridakis was born in Athens in 1977. At the young age of 12 he was already performing with school bands\, and by the age of 14 he had already appeared on television nationally in Greece. Manos joined Dimitri Vassilakis´ quartet in 1993 at the age of 15\, establishing himself as a kid prodigy to the professional Greek music scene. Joining Takis Barberis´ band in 1997 gave Saridakis his first recording experience\, when he participated on Barberis’ “Naiva” CD\, which was on the top of the charts in Greece in 1998. \nIn 1999 he joined Mode Plagal. This experimental group combined the traditional music of Northern Greece with elements of African-American music. The band created a new “mainstream” on the Greek music scene\, that received recognition not only all over Greece\, but also in other countries in Europe\, Asia\, and America. They received 5 snares in “Modern Drummer” for the first CD. The 2nd CD was voted 96 on the World Music Charts in Europe for 2000\, and the 3rd CD has reached the Top 20 of the charts in Greece\, and was voted No 13 in the Top 20 of the WMCE (World Music Charts Europe) in March 2002 and No 33 in the TOP 100 for the Year 2002. \nDuring that time Saridakis participated also to Dimitri Vassilakis “Daedalus Project-Labyrinth”. This album was album of the month for the BBC music magazine March 2002 and was voted 2nd jazz album of the year 2002 at the BBC Internet poll. \nIn 2006 Manos earned a place in the top 25 best jazz piano players in the world under the age of 30 in the prestigious Thelonius Monk competition. \nHe has also recorded and/or performed with America´s jazz & rock artists such us: David Liebman (sop. sax)\, Mark Johnson (bass)\, Ralph Peterson (drums)\, Jamey Haddad (drums\, percussion)\, Melissa Slowcum (bass)\, Essiet Essiet (bass) Ron McClure (bass)\, Satoshi Takesi (drums\, percussion)\, Bill Derby (guitar)\, Todd Isler (drums)\, Kenny Rampton (trumpet)\, Lily White (sax)\, Andrea Valentini (drums)\, Bud Maltin Orchestra\, Vali Music\, Power Stacion Orchestra; and European artists\, such as Bulgarian master of kaval Theodosii Spassov\, Kostas Anastasiadis (drums)\, Petro-Loukas Halkias (clarinet) and the vocalists Savina Yiannatou\, Eleni Tsaligopoulou\, Dimitris Basis\, Theodosia Tsatsou\, Arleta\, Sotiria Leonardou and many more. \nHe has performed in major festivals\, concert halls\, clubs and in Private Functions such as Birdland\, Blue Note\, Yale University\, Smoke\, Cleopatras Needle\, Pumpkins\, Sugar Hill Bistro\, 17 MAIN\, Assembly\, South City Grill\, Palmers Crossing\, Onassis Foundation\, World Yacht Club\, The Princeton Club\, The Penn Club\, NYC Athletic Club\, The Hilton Hotel\, The Marriott Hotel\, The Pier Hotel\, The Skyline Club at Met Life Building\, Barbican (UK)\, Athens Concert Hall (GR)\, 1st and 2nd Ethnic-Jazz festival in Athens (2000-1)\, National Percussion Festival\, Half Note Jazz Club\, Parafono\, Diogenis Pallas\, Iera Odos\, Sfedona\, Hi-Hat\, Bebop\, President Hotel\, Intercontinetal Hotel\, The Hilton Hotel etc. \n“Saridakis solos have clear compositional direction with energy and attention focused on particular figures and developments. It was as if the clouds had parted\, and the scene was suddenly visible and compelling”.\n“Live at Birdland NY”\, NEW YORK PRESS\, Jim Eigo \n“Mode Plagal is Hipper than any new American record I’ve heard in a long time. They take traditional dances and carols from Macedonia and Thrace and grooves them to death. On a recent visit to Thessaloniki\, Billy Cobbam listened to a number of Greek jazz albums. This is the one he bought.”\n“MODERN DRUMMER”\, Hal Howland \n \nYiorgos Georgiadis\, bass \nHe was born in Athens in 1969.He studied electric bass with G.Fakanas from 1991. SUMMARY:EDUA ZADORY & ANASTASIIA DOMBROSKA - DUO EDAN
DESCRIPTION:EDUA ZADORY & ANASTASIIA DOMBROSKA – DUO EDAN\nA special recital of classical music for violin and piano takes place on 17/8 by DUO EDAN\, the two outstanding virtuoso soloists from Vienna\, the Hungarian violinist Édua Zádory and the Ukrainian pianist Anastasiia Dombrovska. Édua and Anastasiia formed a duo with passion\, personality and an astonishing homogeneity\, where the boisterous and confident interpretation of Zadory is in perfect artistic harmony with the fiery and impetuous playing of Dombrovska. \nÉdua Zádory\, violin\nAnastasiia Dombrovska\, piano \nThe concert takes place under the auspices of the Embassy of Hungary and the Embassy of Ukraine in Athens and the kind support of Aegean Airlines and Priamos Maritime. \nDUO EDAN | édua zádory – anastasiia dombrovska \nThe soloists of the EDAN duo\, Édua Zádory (violin) and Anastasiia Dombrovska (piano) both studied at the University of Music in Vienna\, and have been working together since 2009. Although the duo EDAN is relatively speaking still at the beginning of its career\, they have already adapted a clearly international approach. This is due to the fact that the members of the duo\, Édua and Anastasiia (hence their name\, EDAN) were celebrated and well-respected artists in Europe’s concert halls even before they started working together. Édua Zádory has had a 10-year-long international experience as a soloist and chamber musician\, whereas Anastasiia Dombrovska has been a soloist with the most important orchestras of Eastern Europe on tour. \nIn their founding year\, the duo of Zadory and Dombrovska was selected by the renowned jury of the chamber music competition Concorso Internazionale di Musica da Camera Gaetano Zinetti (Sanguinetto\, Verona) as first prize winner for excellent performance and exemplary interpretation. In rapid succession\, the temperamental duo EDAN held concerts in Austria (Vienna)\, Italy (Verona and Mantua)\, Egypt (Cairo) and Iran (Teheran). The series of concerts have been going strong ever since. In 2011 alone\, they have already given concerts in Portugal\, Hungary (Budapest and Szeged)\, Germany (Bremen)\, Turkey (Ankara) and Italy (Rome). \nThe members of the duo EDAN form a congenial team\, melting passion and personality into an artistically and musically refined performance. The boisterous and confident Zadory is in perfect harmony with the fiery and impetuous Anastasiia. These radiant artists present an astonishing homogeneity\, which is registered by international audiences as a duo with one breath and one heartbeat. \nThis synchronized heartbeat and artistic harmony\, in which the two musicians reinvent themselves\, can be traced back to their Central European origin: Zádory was born and grew up in Hungary\, whereas Dombrovska grew up in a Poland-Ukrainian family with Jewish predecessors in Kiev. Their formation\, the EDAN duo puts great emphasis on Hungarian and Jewish music\, also reflecting the common origin of these two talented musicians. \nApart from their above mentioned specialty\, the EDAN duo has an extensive repertoire of compositions from the classics as well as contemporary music\, which they are known to present in a surprisingly new way\, and with the highest possible technical accuracy and musical creativity. \nAs for further plans\, a CD recording (Quinton Records)\, a series of concerts at the old Town Hall of Vienna\, the Austrian and Hungarian Cultural Institute in Rome\, and a concert in Innsbruck are already in motion. \nÉdua Zádory\, violin \nÉdua Zádory\, which means “glistening moonrise” in Hungarian\, was born in 1974\, in the southern Hungarian town of Kecskemét. At the early age of seven\, Édua’s outstanding talent on the violin became evident. Taking part in a competition at the Franz Liszt-Musikhochschule\, Édua wowed the judges with her exceptional talent and was offered a scholarship at this outstanding Swiss institute of music. In 1992 Édua began to study under star violinists Habib Kayaleh and Tibor Varga. One of the greatest violinist of the 20th century\, Yehudi Menuhin\, recognized Édua’s exceptional talent. He invited her to join his master classes at Gstaad\, Switzerland. \nIn 1997 Vienna\, the city of music\, became the center of her life. At the University of Vienna\, Édua studied under highly acclaimed teachers Günter Pichler and Ernst Kovacic. After her university studies\, Édua began to attend master classes with István Ruha\, Péter Komlós and the Altenberg Trio Wien. Concerts around the world contributed to her international career. In 2001 Édua and her “Eszterházy Trio” proved their talent once more at the Styriarte music festival in the Austrian city of Graz. Heralding the Trio’s performance\, the paper “Kleine Zeitung” wrote that there was “a ghostly fusion between Beethoven’s music and the three musicians”. \nAt the music festival “Mondseetage 2003-2005” Édua Zádory played chamber music at the highest level\, together with colleagues Christian Altenburger and Benjamin Schmid. A series of solo concerts followed in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein. In 2005 the “Hungaria Piano Trio” –Tamás Varga\, Édua Zádory\, Balázs Szokolay– was formed. Together the trio put on magical performances not only in the Wiener Konzerthaus\, but also at the Budapest Spring Festival. “Édua Amarilla Zádory has it all. Every single stroke of her bow resonates with passion”\, noted the Hungarian Culture Magazine “Élet és irodalom” in 2006. \nNumerous TV and radio performances (in Hungary\, Switzerland\, Austria\, Belgium\, France) as well as CD productions by Hungaroton followed. The “Bulgarian Rhapsody” is Édua Amarilla Zádory’s respectful hommage to (Pancho) Vladigerov and is full of fervid passion and fire. A world premiere released in 2006 by Hungaroton. Another world premiere followed in June 2007 in the Austrian town of Prein an der Rax. There Édua Zádory performed the violin solo dedicated to her by the Austrian composer Johanna Doderer. In July 2007 she performed at the Hungarian Culture Institute in Paris. There the Austro-Hungarian spirit of Édua’s violin expertise brought the music of Enescu\, Bartók und Beethoven to life. In October 2007 hundreds of music lovers were fascinated by Édua’s solo performances at the highly acclaimed Bariloche-Festival “Lao Lao” and in El Borges di Buenos Aires. In September 2008 at the Teatro Nacional di Santo Domingo\, 1.500 people gave Édua a standing ovation after her interpretation of Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. Édua Zádory has recently risen to stardom in places as remote as Iran\, Morocco and Turkey. At the National Opera House in Mersin\, Édua and Rumanian pianist Raluca Stirbat celebrated great triumphs. \nHer professional life in Vienna has been marked by numerous concert engagements. Whether performing solos in the Golden Hall of the Wiener Musikverein\, serving as lead chair of the Vienna Chamber Orchestra\, or playing alongside the other members of her “young” Hungaria Piano Trio\, Édua’s expressive and beautiful music expertly fuses Hungarian soul with the traditional Viennese sound. \nIn 2009 Èdua Zádory in Duo with Anastasiia Dombrovska won first prize at the prestigious Gaetano Zinetti international chamber music competition in Sanguinetto\, Verona. In 2011 she performed at the Loisiarte Festival. Following that\, she participated in the 17th International Canberra Music Festival\, as part of the Australia Tour sponsored by the Austrian embassy. \nFrom October 2011\, she is teaching at Kunstuniversität Graz. \nÉdua “Amarilla” Zádory plays a masterpiece of a violin dating from 1801 and crafted by Joseph and Antonio Gagliano. \nAnastasiia Dombrovska\, piano \nAnastasiia Dombrovska was born in Uzhhorod\, Ukraine in 1987. In 2006 she started her studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna\, with Heinz Medjimorec as her first professor. \nShe has won several international competitions in Ukraine and Slovakia as well as the F. Chopin competition in Poland and in Estonia. \nIn 2009 she won the first prize of the International “Gaetano Zinetti” Chamber Music Competition in Italy and the main price at the “Bluethner Golden Tone Award competition” in Vienna. \nShe has already played with several symphonic orchestras in Poland\, Estonia and Ukraine and gives several concerts as a soloist as well as a chamber musician.

SUMMARY:SASSA VOULGARI
DESCRIPTION:SASSA VOULGARI\n\n“Is it true or I dreamed?”\nA children’s narrative performance with stories and traditional tales for children and adults\, titled “Is it true or I dreamed?”\, is unfolded on 10/8 by the storyteller Sassa Voulgari\, whose style has influenced the younger generations of storytellers. Sassa is well known for her involvement with the traditional art of storytelling for the last twenty years\, collaborating particularly with main museums as Benaki\, Cycladic Art\, Goulandris Natural History and many more. Her extensive experience leads to a different and more improvisational approach to her material\, experimenting with a more modern form of performance. \nSassa Voulgari\, educational psychologist – story teller\n\nSassa Voulgari was born and grew up in Karditsa\, Greece. She is a self-taught story teller and belongs to the small group of pioneers for the revival of the art of story telling in Greece\, beginning to work professionally in 1993. Maybe\, she is the most popular story teller in Greece right now. \nShe is an educational psychologist who works with alternative teaching methods. Her talents for storytelling and singing folk songs were inherited from her mother’s side of the family. She has also been taking vocals lessons since 1998. In 2003 she was the sole storyteller chosen to represent Greece at the annual «Berliner Marchentage» fairy tale festival in Berlin\, Germany. Sassa has taken part in many innovative workshops and educational programs. She tells stories to young and adult audiences\, having programs for all ages. \nShe contributed to and also created on her own\, several progressive story telling programs: educational programs\, reading familiarization programs taking place in public libraries\, story telling inside museums and also established story telling as regular part of the program of many different appearing scenes. \nDuring 2000 she appeared on a television show at Channel 1 of the public television ERT with a 13-series of story telling for children\, having also the redaction of the text. The show was very successful and has been repeated a lot of times since the first broadcast. Her repertoire now exceeds the number of three hundred and fifty stories. She mostly chooses stories out of folk tradition from written but also oral sources. Her choices are mostly Greek stories\, but sometimes she reaches out for other cultures and with the proper research\, care and respect\, she handles the selected material. \nShe has narrated literature and has also created stories on special demands. Her research is about relation of music and speech and inside the stories she makes vocal improvisations and uses traditional songs and natural sounds from percussion. She sometimes uses live music played by fine musicians she works with. \nShe follows the traditional way of story telling\, in which the story teller builds with the audience her material and so she does not memorize any oral text. \nBecause of her studies and her long occupancy with a lot of different creative and educational projects\, Sassa Voulgari has a great deal of experience in telling stories for children of all ages and has cooperated with many schools all over Greece. \nShe has travelled a great lot inside Greece but also abroad and has participated in many conventions concerning the art of story telling\, while she also writes articles and teaches about the folk tales\, story-making and the art of story telling. \n\n\n\n\nSassa Voulgari says:\n– Language is the chief instrument I use to explore my work. Because my technique is based on traditional story telling methods\, I never learn the stories by heart.\n– I believe that the starting point for any good story teller is the communication between the teller and their audience.\n– My view is that a story teller should be like a popular folk singer\, always improvising.\n– Listening to a story can make time become un-time. This can transform everything around you\, and that is when I feel that despite the difficulties\, this is the only thing I ever want to do: to be a story teller\, to give comfort.\n– The nicest thing that anyone has ever told me was “I felt as if you were telling the story to me\, personally\, and yet to everyone else that was here tonight”.

SUMMARY:ELLY PASPALA & TAKIS FARAZIS
DESCRIPTION:ELLY PASPALA & TAKIS FARAZIS\n\n“Rainbows\, Moons and Bicycles”\n\nThe festival continues on 7/8 with an unexpected music surprise from the singer Elly Paspala and the pianist Takis Farazis\, a piano-voice program\, titled “Rainbows\, Moons and Bicycles”\, from two artists who will travel us to past and present English language love (and not only) songs\, reviving the charm of another era in today’s dream! The unique singer Elly Paspala\, sometimes tender\, sometimes explosive\, along with the virtuoso pianist Takis Farazis\, awakens memories of our loves that we have lived and live. The past and the present of the English language love songs by two great Greek artists! \n  \n\nElly Paspala\, vocals\n\nElly Paspala was born in New York\, the daughter of Greek immigrants. While still a high-school student she became a member of the cast in Jules Dassin and Melina Mercouri’s film “The Rehearsal”\, where she also first met and worked with composer Mikis Theodorakis. Later she received her degree in vocals from the Manhattan School of Music\, where she studied with Metropolitan Opera singer Judith Raskin and studied acting with William Hickey at H.B.Studios. Her love for Greece and contemporary Greek music played a decisive role in her choosing to make Greece her home in 1982. \nSoon after arriving she embarked on a long-term musical collaboration with Academy award-winning composer Manos Hadjidakis\, performing with him in concerts and recording several works including “Pornographia”\, “The Ballads of Athinas Sreet”\, “The Roman Agora”\, “The Laiki Agora” and the film-score for Peter Ustinov’s film “Memed my Hawk”. \nShe has performed and recorded with countless Greek song-writers and composers such as Evanthia Remboutsika (“The Dance of the Stars”)\, Panayiotis Kalantzopoulos (“For the Habit of Love”\, “Summertime in Prague”)\, Stamos Semsis (“Which God should I believe in?”\, “The Island of the Lotus-eaters”\, “Living a Lie”)\, Stamatis Kraounakis (“Music for an Image”)\, Mikis Theodorakis and Lena Platonos\, to name a few. \nHer musical identity defies easy categorization. Performances and recordings attest to her vast musical range\, versatility and expressiveness\, with renditions of songs ranging in styles from world-music to pop and jazz to traditional\, from Manos Hadjidakis to Kurt Weill and from Tom Waits to Vassilis Tsitsanis (“In the Light of the Moon”\, “Elly Paspala live at the Athens Music Hall”) rightfully granting her the reputation as being one of Greece’s finest and unique performers. \n\nTakis Farazis\, piano\n\nHe was born in Athens in 1964. He studied classical music at the Hellenic Conservatory and in 1983 he attended the classes of the Hungarian jazz pianist Bela Lacatos. In 1984 he co-founded the jazz-fusion group ISKRA with which he released two albums (“A new day” and “Parastasis”). He has composed music for the group and he got involved later in other ventures and music styles. As an assosiate of the National Theatre of Greece\, he has composed music mainly for Ancient Greek Drama productions participating in the Festival of Epidavrus (Euripides: “Alkestis”\, “Ion”\, “Medea” – Sophocles: “Antigone”\, “Oedipus” – Aeschylus: “Persians”). He has also composed music for the cinema and he has worked with a wide range of Greek composers\, singers and musicians\, as an arranger and a pianist in a large number of recordings and concerts in Greece and Europe. \nIn 2010 he cooperated with Charles Lloyd and Maria Farantouri in Athens Concert (Herode Atticus Odeon)\, which was recorded and released by ECM in 2011. He has participated in international Festivals\, like Brugges Festival (2001)\, International Festival of Jazz Piano in Prague (2005) and theatrical performances as a multi-instrumentalist in Europe\, Australia\, Africa\, North and South America\, China and Japan. His music combines different styles\, balancing between classical\, jazz and world music. His depute recording as a composer “Spells of Musing” has been praised in reviews and highly appreciated by the music lovers in Greece. “Spells of Musing” has also had an exceptional acceptance in Japan. \nBeside his career as a composer and a performer\, he also occupies himself by teaching piano. \nRecordings:\n– “Spells of Musing”\, 1996\n– Euripides΄ “Alkestis”\, 1996\n– B. Brecht΄s “The Caucasian chalk circle”\, 2005\n– Manos Hadjidakis “24 songs”\, 2008 \n\n\n  \nPaspala sings of “Rainbows\, Moons and Bicycles”\n (from an interview with Helen Iatrou to “Athens News”\, Dec. 12\, 2011) \nSinger Elly Paspala may have been born in New York and lived there for the first couple of decades of her life but she has never performed an entire show in English – up until now. Together with composer-jazz pianist Takis Farazis\, she is presenting a repertoire of exclusively English-language songs\, in a show entitled “Rainbows\, Moons and Bicycles”. A tribute to mostly American songwriters\, the program will feature classics penned by George Gershwin\, Cole Porter\, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell\, among others. \nThe “Athens News” spoke with Elly Paspala a few days before the show.\nYou are better known for your Greek art songs and ballads. Tell me about your show “Rainbows\, Moons and Bicycles”.\nMany of these songs are extremely well known. They just play into the socio-cultural myth\, not just that of Americans or English-speaking people but Greeks\, as well. These are songs that are deeply rooted in our psyche but\, for the most part\, I’ve never sung them.\nSome are not well known at all. There are a couple of Gershwin and Cole Porter songs\, but then I also wanted to include a younger generation of songwriters. There’s a Van Morrison song and one by Kiss\, plus a Tom Waits ballad that is very beautiful. These are all songs that I love very\, very much and I just really wanted and needed to sing them. \nDo these songs have special meaning for you?\n“Somewhere over the Rainbow” is a staple of my musical background but\, up until a few years ago\, I never even dreamt of singing it. Sometimes I feel that something is just so perfect the way it is and I do think that the way Judy Garland sings “Somewhere over the Rainbow” is just perfection. It’s like being in paradise. But suddenly I needed to make myself heard through that song. There was a time when I was singing it during the first performances and I would just break down. It was a very emotional experience for me. It reminded me very much of my childhood and my son is 12 going on 13 – it’s a song that talks about dreaming and envisioning another place\, where problems don’t exist and everything is better and it’s so real. It really hit home\, it became very powerful for me. I sing one of my favourite Joni Mitchell songs\, “River”\, which is so deeply rooted in my adolescence. Her lyrics and her music struck a very deep chord in me. I identified with her music very early on. Her lyrics are so poetic yet so direct. \nHave you thought about recording these particular songs\, perhaps?\nI have a strange relationship with recording. I don’t enjoy it. I am more of a live performer\, I really enjoy performing. The recording studio has always been very tedious for me and not an enjoyable experience. I do acknowledge that it helps a musician to progress and move on. It’s like a bit of a landmark for your music. I do cherish my recordings\, even though I’m impossible when I record. I do want to record these songs with Takis because I do love them so much. We’re probably getting that under way after the holidays. The title will probably be the same\, that is\, the rainbows come from “Somewhere over the Rainbow”\, moon comes from “Moon River” and “Moon Dance” and bicycles comes from Tom Waits’ song “Broken Bicycles”. \nWhat music genres and styles do you prefer to sing?\nI like all types of music and I don’t like to restrict myself to one kind and that is why I am not easily categorized. I have experimented with all types of songs\, so it might seem very unorthodox to go from a song written by Hadjidakis to a song written by Tom Waits\, but that never really mattered to me. I choose songs based on what happens to me when I hear them. When I see that something moves me or excites me or intrigues me\, I need to identify with it. If I feel that I need to get it into my body and out of my mouth and soul\, then that’s the song I’m going to choose. It doesn’t matter what genre it’s from. It just needs to speak to me.
